Our athletes continue to make a big name for themselves beyond the borders. This time it is the National Basketball team, who will represent us in the Centrobasket Championship in Panamá, a competition where only the best in the region participate and where they can earn their spot to the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Did you know that in September 2015 Costa Rica hosted COCABA’s (Central American Confederation) Championship and that our National Team won silver medal? That second place assured them the ticket to the Centrobasket Championship 2016 which will be held in Panamá.
Today the Panamanian Basketball Federation (FEPABA) together with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) conducted the draw ceremony of the Centrobasket Championship Panamá 2016, championship for which Costa Rica earned their spot last year. The draw ceremony was held at the Hotel El Panamá in Panama City, and FIBA broadcasted live on their official YouTube channel.
Several special guests were invited to the event, they represented the different organizations and countries that will participate next June in Panamá. Among the participants were Alberto García, Executive Director of FIBA; Davis Peralta and Antonio García renowned former basketball players of Panamá, representatives of Panamá’s City Hall and the Sport Council, Roberto Arango, Director of the Panamanian Sports Institute; Cuba and Costa Rica Ambassadors, and of course, FEPABA’s President Jair Peralta.
Once the drawing was done, Costa Rica got their spot to compete in Group B next to México, Bahamas, Virgin Islands and Dominican Republic. Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Cuba, Antigua and Panamá will all compete in Group A. Panamá has hosted Centrobasket twice, in 1967 and in 2006 when they won the Championship.
Last year, Costa Rica hosted COCABA Championship which also brought together Central American, Panamá and Costa Rica won the first and second place, in that order. Costa Rica’s Basketball Team is led by the experienced North American coach Josh Erickson. An interesting fact is that Adolfo Machado, Panamá’s Football Team and Deportivo Saprissa’s player; attended one of the matches at the National Gym to show support to the basketball teams.

Why is it important for Costa Rica to compete in the Centrobasket Championship?
The two best teams of each group will play the Semi Finals in Centrobasket, the the winners will compete in the Final and the rest will fight for a third place. The best five teams of Centrobasket 2016 will automatically classify to the Division A of the qualifiers for FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 and to the FIBA American Cup 2017. In addition, the best seven teams of Centrobasket 2016 will classify to the Central American and Caribbean Games 2018.
